Antique & Classic Row Boat Restoration
Historic canoe and wooden rowboat restorations find their way to my shop regularly. If you have an older boat that’s been in the family for years—or one you’ve rescued because it deserved another life—I can help you restore it properly and keep it on the water.
Caring for an Old Wooden Rowboat Isn’t Easy
And That’s Normal
Wooden rowboats can be challenging to move, store, and maintain. Over time, it’s common to see issues such as:
- Peeling or worn finishes
- Weather damage
- Dry rot (especially in hidden areas)
- Soft spots in ribs, keel, or gunwales
If you’re noticing these problems, don’t be discouraged—and don’t blame yourself. It’s simply the nature of antique wood boats, especially in changing moisture and temperature conditions.
Row Boat Repair & Restoration Services
My goal is to make your wooden rowboat solid, beautiful, and reliable again while respecting the boat’s original character. Depending on the condition, restoration work may include:
- Recoating and renewing spar varnish
- Replacing rotted ribs, keel, and gunwales
- Repairing damaged planking and structural components
- Refinishing to protect the wood and extend the life of the boat
- Preventative improvements to reduce future issues
I approach each project with careful planning and long-term durability in mind—so the restoration holds up for years, not just a season.
Experience with Lapstrake, Shiplap, and More
Over the years, I’ve restored many types of wooden rowboats and small craft, including:
- Lapstrake rowboats (including Ross Boats and Bonnie Boats)
- Peterborough shiplap rowboats
- Wooden sailing dinghies and other classic small boats
Whenever possible, I work to maintain historical accuracy, and I take pride in blending new wood with old so repairs look right—not “patched.” Matching grain, color, and finish is one of the details that separates a true restoration from a basic repair.
More Than Rowboats
In addition to antique rowboat restoration, I also offer:
- Canoe restoration
- Custom cedar-canvas canoes
- Custom paddles
- (And yes) custom acoustic guitars
You could say I’m a bit obsessed with wood—and the craftsmanship that comes with it.
