I make unique, artistic canoe paddles that are both fun to use and built to perform. Each paddle is handcrafted as a functional tool first—but finished with the care and detail of a true piece of wood art.
Handcrafted Paddles by Cook Craft
At Cook Craft, I spend much of my time building and restoring traditional watercraft such as cedar-canvas canoes and vintage wooden boats. I work with native woods sourced from in and around Algonquin and the Ottawa Valley, turning raw lumber into something beautiful you can use to explore the outdoors.
While I take pride in every canoe and boat I craft, a paddle is a work of art all its own. I put the same level of time, precision, and attention into my custom paddles as I do into my boats.
Premium Woods & Materials
Most of my paddles are carved from red oak, but I also work with:
- Black cherry
- White ash
Each wood has its own grain pattern, weight, and feel—so the best choice depends on your style of paddling and the look you want.
Designed for Performance (Not Just Looks)
Every paddle is treated as a functional art piece and built through a careful process:
- Meticulously carved by hand
- Sanded and shaped for comfort and balance
- Stained to highlight the character of the carving and grain
- Finished with premium spar urethane for protection against water and weather
By carving some areas of the blade thinner and leaving strength where it’s needed, I can create a paddle that feels light in the hand while remaining durable and dependable.
Ridged Blade Texture = Increased Efficiency
The subtle ridged texture left in portions of the blade isn’t just decorative—it has been shown to improve efficiency when moving water, helping the paddle “grab” and transfer power effectively.
