Custom Wooden Rowboat
Inspired by a Classic Whitehall Design
Explore Muskoka’s lakes and river networks in a handcrafted Oxtongue River Skiff—a custom wooden skiff I designed using the legendary Whitehall rowboat as inspiration. Whitehall boats are traditional British rowing craft with a design lineage that goes back centuries, known for their elegant lines and capable handling.
The Oxtongue River Skiff carries that same classic feel, including the signature wine-glass transom, while being purpose-built for Canadian waterways.
A Lighter, Easier-to-Handle Alternative to a Whitehall
Unlike a traditional Whitehall, this skiff is designed to be lightweight and practical for real use.
- Under 100 lbs (approximately one quarter the weight of many Whitehalls)
- Built with a North American cedar rib-and-plank construction
- Lighter than lapstrake-built boats, making it easier to handle on land
That reduced weight means you can:
- Move it more easily for portages
- Load and transport it with less hassle (including car-top transport, depending on your setup)
Built for Windy Lakes and Narrow Rivers
This skiff is designed to perform in a range of conditions, including:
- Windy lakes
- Narrow waterways like the Oxtongue River
- Rivers and backchannels throughout Muskoka and beyond
The hull shape is highly maneuverable and responsive, making it enjoyable to row whether you’re exploring open water or winding river routes.
Craftsmanship You Won’t Find in Mass-Produced Boats
Like all Cook Craft builds, the Oxtongue River Skiff is made with careful attention to detail—combining classic design with practical, modern usability. If you’re looking for a custom wooden rowboat with heritage styling and lightweight performance, this skiff is a standout option.
